VfB Stuttgart | CEO Alexander Wehrle: Team “competitive” even in case of relegation

CEO Alexander Wehrle sees VfB Stuttgart well prepared for a quick return in the event of relegation from the Bundesliga.

“We’ll get an absolutely competitive team, if that’s the way it should be,” said Wehrle on “SWR Sport”. All players would also have signed contracts for the 2nd Bundesliga. Top performers like Sasa Kalajdzic and Borna Sosa are always associated with other clubs.

VfB is in the relegation place with two games to go before the end of the season. The gap to Hertha BSC is four points and the lead to Arminia Bielefeld is two. Wehrle hopes that Stuttgart can at least hold 16th place in order to be allowed to compete in the relegation. The 47-year-old, who succeeded Thomas Hitzlsperger in March, sees this as an opportunity. “You have to take it positively and not see it as a punishment,” he said. “Relegation can also be fun.”

During his time as managing director of 1. FC Köln, Wehrle and the Domstädter prevailed in the preseason in the playoffs against Holstein Kiel and stayed in the league.
