The first semi-finalist of the handball World Cup has been determined. It is Croatia. The southern Europeans won dramatically against Hungary – with a goal in the last game.
Croatia’s handball players have reached the World Cup semi-final for the first time in eight years and for the sixth time. The co-host prevailed in a dramatic quarter-finals in Zagreb against Hungary with 31:30 (16:16) and can continue to hope for a medal. The opponent in the preliminary round is then determined between Record Champion France and Egypt.
After a balanced start phase, Hungary pulled away to three goals for the first time in the middle of the first half at 8: 5. But the little cushion was used up until the break. After the change, the same picture was offered. Once again, Hungary was able to set themselves down to three goals, but again the hosts countered and made the equalizer to 24:24 ten minutes before Ultimo.
Despite the support of the frenetic fans, the Croatians could initially not use the momentum from ex-national coach Dagur Sigurdsson. Rather, Hungary pulled away with a 4-0 run. In a crazy final phase, however, the home side turned the game cheered after a goal by Marin Šipić a second before the final siren the win that was hardly considered possible.
