In the early morning of Wednesday, February 19, the sirens of fire wagons sounded through Zoetermeer. Thick, black plumes could be seen above the Rokkehage business park and along the Oostweg. De Eendracht Autosloperij on the Bleiswijkseweg was in a light false. Most residents near De Brand received an NL-Alert around 5 a.m. Why one and the other not? Indebuurt is looking for it.

The Zoetermeerse fire brigade received the report of a very large fire. Together with colleagues from the Safety Region Haaglanden They got the fire under control at 5.45 am. Fortunately, the residents and their caravans were spared during the fire, but the car demolition company was completely destroyed by the fire.

Smoke, soot and rubber

Zoetermeerders near the Bleiswijkseweg and in the Rokkeveen district heard a loud alarm from an NL-Alert on their mobile phone. The message stated the advice to close doors, windows and ventilation systems because of the smoke and flying soot particles. In those particles, the fire brigade found leftovers burned PVC and rubber of car tires. The breathing or touching of this is not so tasty for our health.

NL-Alert does not work for everyone

Not everyone in this area received an NL-Alert on the mobile phone. According to central government, this can have several causes:

  • Your mobile phone has no contact with a mast that broadcasts an NL-Alert. This is possible if you are mobile, has no reach or is in aircraft position.
  • You are not (just) in the broadcast area of NL-Alert, even if the fire is close by.
  • A large building between your mobile and the mast can block the signal. Your mobile will then seek contact with another mast, which may just fall outside the broadcast area of NL-Alert.
  • Has your mobile been in contact with a mast that is further away? It may be that it keeps contact with that, even if it is twenty kilometers away from you. In this case you will not receive alerts in your area.

Spend it

NL-Alert therefore sends warnings to our cell phones, but also to travel information screens in public transport and digital billboards. Always read an NL-Alert, follow the advice and point out others. It is intended for you and everyone’s health.

The Ministry of Justice and Security shares multiple information videos online about NL-Alert. Below you will find an example.
