One of the best-known tennis players in history returns: Venus Williams is there at the WTA tournament in Washington DC-and also at the US Open in August?
At the age of 45, Venus Williams reported back in professional tennis. In Washington DC, the former number one in the world is back on the pitch at a WTA tournament for the first time in 16 months-and leaves a return to the US Open.
The seven-time Grand Slam winner had contested her last official match so far in March 2024 at the tournament in Miami. This was followed by an operation on the uterus. Now Williams is back to the racket at the hard court event in the US capital. On Tuesday (from 4 p.m.) she meets her compatriot Peyton Stearns in the first round.
In front of her comeback, Williams kept in a media round, which concerns possible further appearances in the current season. Does she possibly take part in the US Open? “I’m at this tournament at the moment,” said Williams. “But who knows: Maybe something else will come, but I don’t let myself be looked at the cards,” said the Olympic champion of Sydney 2000. She also explained that she believed that she wanted to know what she wanted to do.
The tournament in Washington is the prelude to prepare for the US Open that begin on August 24th. In her last three participations in Flushing Meadows, Williams left the first round. She celebrated her greatest success at the Grand Slam in New York in 2000 and 2001 – in these two years she won the title.
