Let’s call her Grazia, a fictional name. He is 16 years old. On Sunday afternoon she didn’t go out with her friends, no walking at Valentino or hanging out in Piazza San Carlo, because she has a strong passion: refereeing. At the “Don Mosso” in Venaria Reale, Grazia directed the match between the home Cervotte and the Torino girls, Under 17 championship. In full injury time, with the score at 3-3, he saw a penalty for the Granata and blew the whistle. Not an easy whistle. Torino scores and wins 4-3. And here reason goes out. A shower of insults towards the girl and, at the final whistle, about ten home fans, many of whom are parents of the players, try to climb over to enter the pitch. A deer begs: “Stop, dad, I’m ashamed!”. Nobody calls the Carabinieri as Grazia asks, her parents do it after being surrounded in the stands: the mother is pushed, the father is punched in the face in front of his 12 year old son. The president of ASD Venaria Reale is Giovanni Pasquale, former Inter and Toro full-back. In a statement he condemned the episode, expressed apologies and solidarity, reiterated the club’s educational commitment and promised measures against violent offenders. We hope so. Drain them from the plant, minimum. The sports judge imposed “only” a 400 euro fine on the club because Grazia, in the referee’s report, instead of attacking the uncooperative managers, asked to reward the Cervottes who contained their parents. Let’s hope that Grazia doesn’t lose her passion and grows well. We need good referees, given the current situation. And, even more, of children who educate adults. Like in Venaria.
