Deputies of the State Duma are preparing a draft of a new law on the funeral business in Russia, according to which funerals will be made a public service, transmits the Vedomosti newspaper, citing an interlocutor in the State Duma and a source close to the presidential administration.

According to one of the sources of the newspaper, this will be a complete replacement of the law “On Burial and Funeral Business”, which has been in force since 1996.

The bill proposes that individual entrepreneurs and legal entities will be able to organize funerals only if they have a permit issued by the authorized body of the subject in the field of funeral business, said a source from the State Duma. An application for obtaining such a permit will need to be submitted through the regional portals of public services.

Those organizations that receive permission will be entered in a special register, which should list the services they provide, as well as their cost, the Vedomosti source added.
