Its number two, Cardinal State Secretary Pietro Parolin, confirmed an offer from the new head of the Catholic Church. However, it is particularly important that the negotiations “finally start”.
In a round of talks, Parolin referred to the Pope’s offer from the USA for meetings in a “neutral, protected place” such as the Vatican. At the same time, according to a report by the Italian news agency Ansa, the cardinal made it clear that the Vatican does not necessarily see itself as an intermediary. The offer is “not a mediation. A mediation must be applied for by the parties.”

The Italian pointed out that other places such as Geneva were also under discussion. Parolin added: “It is not important where the negotiations between Russians and Ukrainians, for whom we all hope, will take place. It is only important that these negotiations can finally begin.” So far there is no date for new discussions. In the meantime there was talk of a meeting in mid -June in the Vatican.
