UEFA will use the video referee VAR in all preliminary rounds of the Champions League. The video assistant is also used earlier for the qualification matches in the Europa League and the Conference League.
“From now on, VAR will be used throughout Europe from the first and second qualifying rounds,” said UEFA. Last season, the VAR was only present from the third qualifying round of the Champions League.
In the Europa League and Conference League, UEFA will use VAR for the first time during qualifying matches. In the Europa League this will happen from the third qualifying round. In the Conference League, the VAR is there from the play-offs.
UEFA wants to use VAR in the Europa League from the start in the following season and also introduce it earlier in the Conference League. But according to the association, it remains to be seen whether this is feasible due to the large number of matches.
