Van Oevelen had to take frequent action, especially in the first half. Volendam got little grip on Sparta Rotterdam, which created opportunities. Partly thanks to excellent goalkeeping by Van Oevelen, the opening goal was not achieved before half time. “We had a lot of trouble with them in the beginning,” says Van Oevelen.
The goalkeeper also played a great game after the break, but chose the wrong angle for a penalty kick. Tobias Lauritsen sent the ball into the corner.
FC Volendam usually performs well in home games, but little was successful against Sparta. “Maybe the winter break is a good time to relax,” said Van Oevelen. Trainer Rick Kruys does not want to talk about ‘a good time’ for the winter break. “You want to get over this as quickly as possible. It would be an easy excuse after today.”
