On April 2nd, Val Kilmer died of pneumonia. In 2014, the Hollywood star fell ill with larynx cancer. He defeated the disease. But remained weakened. Val Kilmer has publicly talked about healing his larynx cancer through prayers and spiritual methods.
Spiritual access to healing
Kilmer was a confessed member of Christian Science Church, a religious movement that is known for its rejection of conventional medicine and instead relies on prayer as a remedy. In interviews and in his autobiography “I’m your huckleberry”, Kilmer described that he initially rejected medical treatment. And tried to overcome his cancer through prayers and mental conviction.
Later medical intervention
Despite his spiritual beliefs, he ultimately decided to take medical treatment for larynx cancer. Including tracheotomy (an air pipe cut), chemotherapy and other medical interventions. These treatments had permanently affected his language skills. In later years he spoke to an electronic device after his vocal cords were badly damaged. In “Top Gun: Maverick” from 2022, his last cinema appearance, his voice was created by artificial intelligence.
Val Kilmer initially tried to “pray away” his larynx cancer. In the sense of his faith. But ultimately he used modern medicine to save his life. He later said that he sees both as part of his healing: faith and science.
Early signs and diagnosis
As early as 2014, Kilmer noticed symptoms such as loss of voice and difficulty swallowing, which he initially ignored. Only a serious incident in 2015, in which he vomited blood, led him to the hospital, where the diagnosis was made.
Treatment and conflict of faith
As a practicing supporter of Christian Science, Val Kilmer believed in healing through prayer and spiritual practices. Despite his religious beliefs, he decided on conventional medical treatment at the urging of his children, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy. He made this decision to relieve the fears of his family.
Late consequences and artistic work
The medical interventions, especially the tracheotomy, significantly impaired Kilmer’s voice. Nevertheless, he remained artistically active and continued his career. His fight against cancer and his return to the film business were recorded in the documentary “Val” from 2021.
