Hollywood legend Val Kilmer’s cause of death has now been officially confirmed. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced that on April 1, 2025 at the age of 65, the actor died of pneumonia.
Kilmer, who was diagnosed with larynx cancer in 2014 and undergone several medical interventions, had initially recovered well. Despite his health challenges, the actor remained a darling of the fans and shaped the cinema over four decades. Accordingly, many people on social media said goodbye.
Val Kilmer: officially confirmed the cause of death
The sad news was published by his daughter Mercedes Kilmer (33), who is also an actress. Just a few days after his death, the media spoke that the actor had died of pneumonia – information that was now confirmed by official sources. According to the documents published by the Health Department of Los Angeles, the actor suffered from other health problems in addition to pneumonia. Other diagnoses included acute hypoxemic breathing failure, chronic breathing failure and squamous epithelial carcinoma – a malignant tumor on the base of the tongue. Serving was also listed as a contributor that Kilmer heavily burdened Kilmer in his last months of life.
Breakthrough and career start
Kilmer started his career at the renowned Juilliard School and gained great fame early on. In 1984 he appeared for the first time when he “Top Secret!” The “Airplane!”-Maker Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker contributed. The film was a great success and paved Kilmer the way to an impressive career, despite many strokes of fate.
With the role of the Lt. Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the action film “Top Gun” (1986) Kilmer finally became an international star. The figure of the “Iceman” remained one of the best known of his work for many years, and Kilmer recorded this iconic role in 2022 in the blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick”.
Kilmer not only shone in action films, but also showed its versatility in other genre films. His representation of The Doors Frontman Jim Morrison in the film of the same name “The Doors” (1991), which shaped his public image, was particularly remarkable. In the following decades, Kilmer played in other large films, including “Thunderheart” (1992), “Tombstone” (1993), “True Romance” (1993), “Heat” (1995), “The Ghost and The Darkness” (1996) and “The Saint” (1997). In “Mindhunter” (2004) and “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” (2005) he was also able to convince a younger audience.
Kilmer leaves two children from his marriage to British actress Joanne Whalley (63), with whom he was married from 1989 to 1996. The two got to know each other during the filming of “Willow” (1988) and, even after their divorce, continued to be in front of the camera, including “Played – Judged” (2006) and “Twixt” (2011).
