How do you rate the SC Freiburg squad?
Overall, despite the departure of Nico Schlotterbeck – one of the rising stars of the past season – the squad seems to have improved. Especially in the offensive, with Ritsu Doan, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh and Michael Gregoritsch, three national players could be signed, which significantly expand the options for coach Christian Streich. Ermedin Demirovic’s departure to Augsburg can be tolerated because, although he often hinted at his potential, in the end he was rarely able to convert it decisively onto the pitch and often seemed overly motivated.
The aforementioned departure from Schlotterbeck left a gap that was quickly closed with the signing of returnee Matthias Ginter. An advantage was certainly the strong homeland connection of the German player, who otherwise would probably not have been guided back to the Dreisam in the best footballer age. The only drop of bitterness in this exchange: The strong left foot is now missing in the central defense of the SC. Nico’s brother Keven and the still young Kimberly Ezekwem are not (yet) full-fledged alternatives.

Consistency in the Freiburg squad remains extremely important. Big upheavals, like the ones that clubs and fans had to endure a few years ago, no longer happen. Instead, top performers like captain Christian Günter, Vincenzo Grifo or Philipp Lienhart can be retained for years. A very strong development.
Where do you see a need to catch up by Deadline Day?
Squad planning is already well advanced. The only urgent need is in the midfield center. After the departure of Janik Haberer to Union Berlin, there is no reliable option behind the seeded Nicolas Höfler and Maximilian Eggestein. Yannik Keitel is considered talented, but has struggled with injuries in the past. With Robert Wagner, another rough diamond has moved up into the professional squad, who knew how to convince as an A-Junior in the second team in the 3rd division last season, but despite the coming triple burden, only short assignments are initially expected. However, those responsible have an eye on the position and have announced a commitment. There were recently rumors about Merlin Röhl from FC Ingolstadt 04.

Dealing with the starting eleven on the right in the defensive line is still interesting. Jonathan Schmid was slowed down by Corona for a long time last season, so Lukas Kübler used his chance and finally being free of injury to establish himself as a regular player. With Hugo Siquet, a talent was signed in winter who is hoping for his big breakthrough, but will probably have to be patient for the time being. Most recently, the Belgian junior international has already been moved to the left wing because another youngster, Kiliann Sildillia, is preparing to fight for a regular place as a right-back. The Frenchman could be the next big discovery at Sport-Club.
What do you expect from the playful appearance of the team?
The wide range of attacking forces with starting eleven potential indicates that the 3-4-3 practiced more often in the past is an obsolete model. Therefore, the preferred system will probably be a 4-4-2, with one of the two strikers likely to act hanging. In addition, the statics of the SC game will change. Neither Ginter nor Lienhart – both equipped with a strong right foot and the expected core duo in central defense – have the offensive advances and vertical balls of the left foot Schlotterbeck in their repertoire. I’m looking forward to the solutions of the coaching team in this regard.

It will also be important that the pillars of the team around Günter, Höfler, Ginter, Lienhart and goalkeeper Flekken are largely spared from long-term injuries. A failure of this quintet would be difficult to compensate for and would result in a loss of quality.
What’s in it for SC Freiburg in 2022/23?
I think a repeat of last season is out of the question. The upcoming triple load will be a challenge that can also affect the placement in the end. Realistically, the SC should come in around tenth place at the end of the season, but without ever getting into serious relegation problems.
