User opinion 1. FC Köln: Full pot Baumgart – squad optimized for it

Bundesliga fan series

After the 2nd Bundesliga and 3rd League, Transfermarkt will also take a detailed look at the 18 teams in the Bundesliga with the help of the community in the coming days. Which players are the fans looking forward to the most, where is there room for improvement and what is in the squad for 2022/23 for your favorite club? For this we asked around in the forums and picked up assessments – in league one we continue with user “Klattius” and 1. FC Köln.

How do you rate the squad of 1. FC Köln?

What started last season will be consistently continued this season: great care was taken to ensure that the squad was homogeneous and suited Steffen Baumgart’s football.

On the one hand, with Sargis Adamyan and Linton Maina on the offensive, but also with Eric Martel and the talent Denis Huseinbasic in midfield, players were signed who bring significantly more speed into the squad, on the other hand, care was taken to ensure that Steffen Tigges and Florian Dietz, who was raised from the 2nd team, does not have to rely solely on Anthony Modeste in the storm center, but also introduces alternatives or potential successors there. In addition, there is Kristian Pedersen, a variable player in his prime who is an alternative both on the left and in the center of defence.

The only major departure – Salih Özcan – should be able to be compensated for. Overall, I see the squad as broader, which will be important for the upcoming European Cup season.

Where do you see a need for improvement by Deadline Day?

Further additions should not be planned. Only the departure of the most valuable player in the squad, Ellyes Skhiri, could force FC to act again. Otherwise, it’s more about the fact that some players should leave the club. Above all, the names Ondrej Duda, who simply does not fit Baumgart football, or Sebastian Andersson, who fell well short of expectations, come up. In addition, they would certainly like to give up club icon Timo Horn, who is a great second goalkeeper, but for this position – like the two aforementioned ones – gets a salary that puts too much strain on the budget.

With the exception of Horn, you probably wouldn’t have to get a replacement if these players left, because the squad is already well staffed.

What do you expect from the playful appearance of the team?

Full can of Baumgart! 90 minutes of excitement, attacking, being brave and not looking at the name of the opposing jersey. Just go full throttle. The squad has been optimized again for this type of football and I’m very excited to see how a team can bring even more Baumgart onto the pitch than last season.

What can 1. FC Köln do for the whole season?

All. In every direction. Anything is possible between 5th and 18th place. You can go completely under the wheels, or you can top last season – or everything in between as well. Therefore, as every season, the following applies to FC: First of all, only staying up in the league counts. If it is hopefully fixed early, you can see if it is even enough for more. In addition, you have the chance to show yourself in the ECL if you make it through the playoffs. And last season showed that this competition has something to offer, if you look at the quarter-finalists for example.
