US wants to send helicopters, artillery and mines to Ukraine

WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – The United States wants to supply Ukraine with additional weapons and ammunition worth up to 800 million dollars (740 million euros) from its stockpiles. Here is an overview from the US Department of Defense of the systems to be delivered shortly:

– Eleven Mi-17 helicopters of Russian design, originally destined for Afghanistan. Before the war, the US had already handed over five of them to Ukraine.

– 200 M113 armored personnel carriers.

– 100 Humvee armored general purpose vehicles.

– 18 155mm field howitzers with 40,000 artillery shells. “If we need to send more, we will send more,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said.

– Protective equipment for chemical, biological and nuclear incidents. “Ukrainians see this as a reasonable precautionary measure,” spokesman Kirby said.

– Ten special radar systems for artillery reconnaissance, two systems for air reconnaissance.

– 300 Switchblade unmanned drones that can be crashed onto a target with an explosive device.

– 500 Javelin-type anti-tank guided missiles and “thousands” of other armor-piercing weapons.

– C-4 type explosives for clearing obstacles.

– An indefinite number of autonomous coastal defense ships.

– 30 000 combinations of bulletproof vests and helmets.

– An unspecified number of Claymore M18A1 anti-personnel mines. Most land mines are internationally banned by a treaty signed by more than 160 countries because they often remain in place long after hostilities have ended and endanger civilians. The US and Russia have not signed the Ottawa Treaty. According to the Pentagon, however, the contract allows the use of the claymore mines because they are normally laid in a controlled manner and triggered by remote detonation./jbz/DP/he
