US Open winner Raducanu also quickly eliminated at Roland Garros | NOW

Emma Raducanu has not been able to turn around her difficult season at Roland Garros. Last year’s US Open winner lost to Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second round in Paris on Wednesday.

Twelfth seed Raducanu started well at Court Suzanne-Lenglen, but in the last two sets she only won two games against Sasnovich (WTA-47): 6-3, 1-6 and 1-6.

Nineteen-year-old Raducanu has not achieved very appealing results since her very surprising overall victory at the US Open in September. The British have only won eight of her eighteen matches this season. She also failed in the second round at the Australian Open in January.

Against Sasnovich, Raducanu recorded 33 unnecessary errors, against only seventeen winners. The 28-year-old Belarusian played less sloppily (24 unnecessary mistakes) and is in the third round of Roland Garros for the first time in her career. In it she meets the 21st seeded German Angelique Kerber.

With Victoria Azarenka, there was another Belarusian on Wednesday who reached the third round. The two-time Grand Slam winner settled in two sets with former top ten player Andrea Petkovic from Germany: 6-1 and 7-6 (3).

Maria Sakkari lost very surprisingly in the second round. The fourth seeded Greek, semifinalist in Paris last year, was no match for Karolína Muchová from the Czech Republic (WTA-81): 7-6 (5) and 7-6 (4).

Other results in women’s singles

  • Coco Gauff (USA, 23)-Alison Van Uytvanck (Bel): 6-1 and 7-6 (4)
  • Amanda Anisimova (USA, 28)-Donna Vekic (Kro): 6-4 and 6-1
  • Jill Teichmann (Switzerland, 23)-Olga Danilovic (Ser): 6-4 and 6-1.

Schuurs starts well in doubles

Among the men, Félix Auger-Aliassime and John Isner were among the last 32. The ninth-seeded Auger-Aliassime lost only seven games against Camilo Ugo Carabelli (6-0, 6-3 and 6-4) and Isner (23 ) defeated Grégoire Barrère in four sets: 6-4, 6-4, 3-6 and 7-6 (5).

In the women’s doubles there was a good start for Demi Schuurs. The Dutch lost only three games to Spain’s Nuria Párrizas Díaz and Katarzyna Piter from Poland in the opening round, together with her American partner Desirae Krawczyk: 6-0 and 6-3.

Schuurs and Krawczyk are fifth in Paris. The duo took the title in Stuttgart this clay-court season and reached the final of the major WTA tournament in Madrid.
