Laura Siegemund lost her opening game at the US Open on Tuesday (08/30/2022). The 34-year-old was beaten 4: 6, 4: 6 in her first round match against Sorana Cirstea from Romania at the Tennis Grand Slam tournament in New York.
The two-time WTA tournament winner Siegemund, currently only 182nd in the world rankings, had previously had one “unpleasant lot” spoken, Cirstea was “certainly not a favorite player” from her.
Double appearance with Czech Bouzkova
Siegemund competes in doubles at the US Open alongside Czech Marie Bouzkova. In the first round, the duo meets seventh-seeded Chinese Yang Zhaoxuan/Xu YiFan. “I always have big ambitions in doubles”said Siegemund at Eurosport, “Even if you have to say clearly that my partner is not the great doubles expert. But I have confidence in us.”
Favorite Swiatek sovereign
Previously, Iga Swiatek had lived up to her role as the favorite for the title at the start. The 21-year-old Pole prevailed in 1:06 hours 6:3, 6:0 against Jasmine Paolini from Italy and advanced to the second round. “I found my rhythm in the second set. It was a pretty good test for me”said Swiatek. Swiatek has been the dominant player on the tour since Australian Ashleigh Barty retired in the spring and also won the French Open. At Wimbledon, on the other hand, she was defeated in the third round by Alize Cornet from France. Now the Warsaw native is aiming for her second Grand Slam success this year in New York.
