US Open: Murray loses to Berrettini

British tennis star Andy Murray was eliminated in the third round at the US Open in New York.

The 35-year-old lost 4-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1) and 3-6 to number 13 seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Since 2017, former world number one Murray, who has been playing with an artificial hip joint since an operation three years ago, has been waiting for a place in the round of 16 at a Grand Slam tournament. Before that, the Scot had managed to do this 38 times in his career.

Previously, Ons Jabeur had reached the round of 16 for the first time in her seventh tournament participation. After initial problems, the Tunisian Wimbledon finalist prevailed 4: 6, 6: 4, 6: 3 against Shelby Rogers from the USA. In the round of the top 16, Jabeur, fifth in the world rankings, meets the Russian Veronika Kudermetova, who clearly won in two sets (6:2, 6:0) against Dalma Galfi from Hungary.

Before the first serve against his idol, Berrettini had raved about Murray. “It’s inspiring what kind of will he brings, what love he has for this sport,” said the 26-year-old: “I’ve always admired him.”
