Laura Siegemund surprisingly reached the second round at the US Open. The now 37-year-old, who had already caused a sensation with her quarter-finals in Wimbledon in Wimbledon, defeated Diana Shnaider, which was set to number 20 in three contested and exciting sets, 7: 6 and 6: 3 in her opening match.
Siegemund has been back in the second round at the last Grand Slam tournament of the year for the first time since 2019. In general, the Metzing native never managed to go beyond the third round at the hard court in New York. A favorite tournament definitely looks different – but that can change this year.
Siegemund proves nerve strength
Against Shnaider, Siegemund proved their nerve strength – as was the case with some games in London. After the 37-year-old won the first set in the Tiebreak, she shook the one-sided second round relatively quickly.
In the third set, which was characterized by numerous breaks and re-breaks, she got the game to 5: 3 at the crucial moment. Her following impact game then no longer gave away and after the match ball won, after two and a half hours of play time, a little incredulously in the face, thanked her box and seemed visibly dissolved.
In the second round, Siegemund, which also calculates opportunities in the double competition, meets either on Elina Awanessjan from Armenia or Anastassija Sacharowa (Russia). Both on paper simpler solutions than Shhnaider.
