The United States is withdrawing from more than sixty international organizations, treaties and UN institutions that President Donald Trump says are “contrary to American interests.” This is evident from a report published on Wednesday evening memorandum from the White House with a complete list of the organizations involved.

Particularly striking is the massive withdrawal from climate and environmental institutions. For example, the US will stop participating in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN Climate Treaty (UNFCCC), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the biodiversity platform IPBES. UN programs for oceans, water and urban development are also losing American support.

In addition, Washington is cutting ties with organizations in the field of human rights, democracy and the rule of law, including UN Women, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the UN Democracy Fund and the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe. Several UN committees for Africa, Asia and Latin America will also disappear from the list of American partners.

Globalist agendas

According to the White House, the institutions involved promote “radical climate policies and ideological agendas” that would undermine US sovereignty and economy. “These withdrawals will end U.S. taxpayer funding and involvement with entities that promote globalist agendas over U.S. priorities so that U.S. taxpayer dollars can be better used in other ways.”

The United States has historically been and remains the primary funder of the United Nations today. It is difficult to calculate the financial impact of the announced withdrawals, but it is certain that they will leave deep holes in the budgets of several UN funds and programs. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is instructed to effect the withdrawal “as quickly as possible”.
