“US is finalizing plans to send Patriot missile defense systems to Ukraine” | Abroad

The US government is finalizing plans to send Patriot missile defense systems to Ukraine. This is reported by the American channel CNN on the basis of insiders. According to the channel, the Department of Defense in Washington could announce the delivery this week.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has yet to approve the Pentagon’s plan before President Joe Biden signs it. Three US officials told the channel that the green light is expected.

Ukraine has been asking for the advanced Patriot anti-aircraft system for some time now, which can even intercept some aircraft in addition to ballistic and cruise missiles. The system can hit targets at a great distance and height.

Months of training

Russia is attacking important Ukrainian infrastructure with missiles and drones. The Patriot system is said to be the most effective defensive weapon system sent to the country, according to CNN. Officials say that would also help make airspace safer for NATO countries in eastern Europe.

The Patriots can be sent in the days following a decision. Ukrainians will be trained to use the system at the US military base in Grafenwöhr, Germany, according to US officials. Dozens of people are needed to operate the system. Training takes months.
