The American National Football League (NFL) has lost one of its stars. Former trainer John Madden died suddenly and unexpectedly on Tuesday morning.

Former American football player and coach John Madden is dead. He was 85 years old. In the US he was considered an icon and one of the best NFL coaches in football history. He was under contract with the Oakland Raiders, but has worked as a television commentator for all major US television networks since 1979.

Madden’s influence in American football was so great that the game company EA named the football equivalent of FIFA after him. “We all knew him as a Hall of Fame coach and commentator,” wrote NFL President Roger Goodell in a statement, “no one loved football more than a coach.”

Madden won the Superbowl as a coach in 1976, a total of 103 wins and only 32 defeats for his team. He once played college football himself, but gave up an active career early due to an injury.
