DOW JONES–U.S. crude oil inventories unexpectedly fell in the week ended December 26th. According to the state Energy Information Administration (EIA), they fell by 1.934 million barrels compared to the previous week. Analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires had forecast a rise of 0.1 million barrels. In the previous week, inventories had increased by 0.4 million barrels.

Gasoline inventories increased by 5.845 million barrels, according to EIA data. Analysts had expected a gain of 0.3 million barrels, after inventories rose by 2.9 million the previous week.

U.S. oil production was 13.8 million barrels per day for the week.
