WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – The US State Department will host talks between Lebanon and Israel next week. The aim is to negotiate a ceasefire, as a ministry official confirmed. When exactly the talks would take place and who would take part initially remained unclear. As the Israeli news site “ynet” reported, citing a person familiar with the matter, the US ambassadors from the two countries will initially take part.

The USA and Iran recently agreed on a two-week ceasefire, which Israel supports. However, in contrast to Iran and the mediator Pakistan, the USA and Israel do not see Lebanon as part of this agreement. Iran is considering withdrawing from the ceasefire in light of Israeli attacks on allied Hezbollah in Lebanon, according to the Iranian Fars news agency./jcf/DP/he
