The search for a coach at Borussia Dortmund is ongoing. A temporary solution is also being discussed. One candidate seems open to it.

After Nuri Şahin left BVB as head coach, the search for a successor is intensifying. With a candidate it could now become more specific. As the TV channel Sky reports, Urs Fischer should also play a larger role in the Dortmund club management’s considerations. However, no official contact has yet been made with the 58-year-old Swiss.

Fischer, who led Union Berlin from the 2nd Bundesliga to the Champions League, has been without a coaching job since November 2023. According to information from the broadcaster, he would be willing to take on the role of “savior” at BVB. According to media reports, BVB prefers a temporary solution until the summer before a major solution takes over.

Both “Bild” and Sky named Niko Kovač as the favorite for such an interim solution. But Kovač himself made it clear: “There is nothing to report,” he said on the French broadcaster Canal+. “No one spoke to me, I didn’t speak to anyone.” (You can read more about the statement here.)

Roger Schmidt, also a candidate in Dortmund, ruled out an immediate job. “Of course you’re always happy to be appreciated. When someone thinks about entrusting you with a team, that’s always something very positive,” said the 57-year-old in the “Playmaker – Football from All Sides” podcast by 360Media.

“But for me, at the moment, it’s a very clear decision that I’m not going to do anything now.” After leaving Benfica last August, he “will definitely not take over a new club this season.” The statements were made on Monday; BVB parted ways with Nuri Şahin on Wednesday. Schmidt added: “For me, a decision is a fundamental decision.”
