Urs Fischer apologizes for red card

Coach Urs Fischer from 1. FC Union Berlin regrets his red card following the DFB Cup exit at VfB Stuttgart, but says he did not insult referee Sascha Stegemann.

“You can believe me that I didn’t insult the referee,” said the Swiss after his team’s 0-1 (0-1) defeat in the second round of the cup.

Fischer reported that he was in Stegemann’s cabin and apologized. “His statement was that I was too aggressive and forceful.”

Fischer explained that he was annoyed about a referee ball in stoppage time, as a result of which Stuttgart received the ball. After the final whistle, the 57-year-old was shown a red card by the referee.

“It’s not good, I’m really sorry,” said the Union coach. He needs to “have better control over himself.” In his opinion, emotions are part of football. “If that’s too much, I have to accept it and learn from such situations.”

For Union it was the eleventh competitive defeat in a row. Striker Deniz Undav scored the winning goal for VfB in the 45th minute.
