Verstappen started from pole and was clear from the start of the race. He recorded the best lap time, but it was eventually taken away by Charles Leclerc, his competitor in the World Cup standings. The Limburger ran out slowly and had a lead of 12 seconds on the first quarter of the race. He then decided to go into the pit stop to change his tires.

Due to his pit stop, Verstappen dropped to third place in the standings, but he did have the fastest time. He had to chase the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. His competitors had not yet made a pit stop, so they were first and second. On the 28th lap, Verstappen finally overtook Russell and that led to a lot of cheers in the stands.

The lead was retaken a lap later, after Hamilton entered the pit lane. Within a few rounds, the Limburger had a margin of more than 8 seconds on Leclerc, the number two. Yuki Tsunoda ultimately played an important role in Verstappen’s victory. The Japanese stopped because something was wrong with his tires. He continued the race, but still stopped the car. This resulted in a virtual safety car, which enabled Verstappen to replace his tires without difficulty.

Valteri Bottas provided another safety car on lap 55 by stopping at the start straight. Verstappen went into the pit lane and changed his tires. After the safety car disappeared after a number of laps, Verstappen was able to easily overtake Hamilton again. After that, his win on the Zandvoort circuit was no longer in danger, to the delight of the orange sea in the stands.
