The valuable discovery was made on the site of the Carrefour on Vandenperboomplein in Ypres.
“During the excavations, archaeologists were bumped into the remains of a medieval burial domain, including a motte with a wall and a canal from the 12th century,” says the city of Ypres. “This unique find sheds a new light on the earliest history of Ypres and its role as one of the most important cities in Flanders in the Middle Ages.”
Tomorrow Saturday the find will be officially presented at a press moment. The Flemish Minister for Immovable Heritage Ben Weyts is also coming to take a look.
