The government no longer plans to increase the state pension age. Insiders confirm this NRC after earlier reporting by RTL Nieuws. By abolishing this plan, Minister Hans Vijlbrief (Social Affairs and Employment, D66) wants to convince the unions to come back to the negotiating table.
The coalition intended to let Dutch people work one year longer for every year that they live longer on average. With an expected annual yield of 2.7 billion euros (from 2031), this measure was one of the government’s most extensive plans to keep the budget in balance for the coming years.
But immediately there was a lot of criticism. Trade unions FNV, CNV and VCP demanded that the plan be withdrawn, otherwise major demonstrations and strikes would follow. In the 2019 pension agreement, allowing the state pension age to increase more slowly with life expectancy was actually a condition for the unions to agree to the reform of the pension system.
The Senate and House of Representatives also adopted motions that threw the cabinet plan into the trash bin.
