Coach about the success of the club
Union Berlin’s successful coach Urs Fischer has not identified any pattern in the “iron” with a view to the personnel changes in the summer transfer periods. The Bundesliga table fifth was promoted to the upper house in 2019, since then there have been over 150 transfer movements. In the fourth year in the German Oberhaus, there are only four players from back then compared to the premiere season – quite surprising for Coach Fischer.
“Four players? This is madness! But it’s not a system, the high fluctuation was more like that,” explained the Swiss in an interview with “11Freunde”. In the market value ranking, Union is in eleventh place in the Bundesliga with a squad value of 114.1 million euros, framed by VfB Stuttgart and 1. FSV Mainz 05. Measured against these figures, the Köpenickers have always achieved the optimum in the past out of their possibilities. In 2021/22 the club finished fifth, a year earlier seventh.
“It was a plus point in the last few seasons that we had most of the squad together at the beginning of the preparation,” said Fischer. “This summer in particular, the newcomers were in their apartments relatively quickly, which makes a big difference. I know what I’m talking about. The first three months I was in a hotel in Berlin, you almost go crazy because you don’t have your own four walls to retreat to.”

Before this season, the capital club invested 13.5 million euros in newcomers like Jordan (26) and Jamie Leweling (21). This was offset by income of 24.4 million euros – above all for the record departure of Taiwo Awoniyi (24), who was drawn to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. In the negotiations with potential reinforcements, those responsible around Coach Fischer attach great importance to the willingness to give everything. “We also tell them that when we talk to potential newcomers. In the end, not everyone will fight equally well or run equally well, but everyone has to be willing. And everyone has to think collectively to fit into a team,” said the 56-year-old, the longest-serving coach in the Bundesliga after Freiburg’s Christian Streich.
