Union Berlin: Leonardo Bonucci plans a lightning escape

For Leonardo Bonucci, the move from Juventus Turin to Union Berlin did not go as hoped. The central defender could leave as early as winter.

As the Italian newspaper “Corriere dello Sport” reports, Bonucci Union wants to leave Berlin in the winter. Accordingly, the 36-year-old wants to return to Italy immediately.

The lack of sporting success and the difficulties outside the football field would strengthen Bonucci’s desire, the report continues.

Bonucci came to Union Berlin from Juventus on a free transfer in the summer. The 2021 European champion signed a contract with the club from Köpenick until the end of the season.

However, Bonucci does not play an important role at Union. The veteran only played six times in the Bundesliga and was only on the pitch twice for the full 90 minutes.

Bonucci dissatisfied at Union Berlin?

There were reports in the autumn that Bonucci was dissatisfied because he was not taken into account in the Champions League first leg against SSC Napoli (0-1). The defender himself vehemently rejected the rumors.

“That’s a duck, quite simple. Of course he’s disappointed if he doesn’t start, but those are all my players,” said former coach Urs Fischer at the time and praised: “When it comes to behavior, being there for the team Leo really behaves in an exemplary manner. He helps out, encourages the boys, is there for them, gives them tips.”

Bonucci hasn’t even played under the new coach Nenad Bjelica.

In Italy, a door may even open for the central defender. According to Corriere dello Sport, AS Roma is interested in signing him. The Giallorossi are therefore on the lookout for a cheap addition to the defense as Evan N’Dicka will be at the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
