Union Berlin extends with Robin Knoche: Talks “targeted from the start”

Only Awoniyi more valuable in the squad

1. FC Union Berlin has clarified one of the most important personal details for the coming season. The expiring contract with defense chief Robin Knoche was extended after interest from Werder Bremen, for example, arose recently. The Bundesliga club did not provide any information about the term of the new working paper.

Knoche moved to the capital from youth club VfL Wolfsburg in the summer of 2020 and has since made 74 appearances (two goals/one assist) for the “Iron”. “I felt very comfortable at Union right from the start. When you move to a new club for the first time after 15 years, you first have to get used to a lot of new things. Union made it very easy for me right from the start and gave me a great welcome. We managed to stay up again, qualified for Europe and asserted ourselves in European competition. These moments and the very good discussions with those responsible at the club made the decision easy for me,” said the central defender.

During the most recent market value update, Knoche had to accept a slight devaluation from 7.5 to 6 million euros. He is still the second most valuable player in the Union squad behind striker Taiwo Awoniyi (€15m). Managing Director Oliver Ruhnert said about the signature: “The talks with Robin were effective from the start, as both sides wanted to continue to go down a common path. His experience, willingness to perform and his consistent performance have made him a top performer in our team. Robin should continue to be a key component of our Bundesliga team in the coming years.”
