Union Berlin: Bonucci’s departure apparently failed for the time being

Union Berlin and transfer flop Leonardo Bonucci are apparently not parting ways – at least not for the time being.

As “Tuttomercatoweb.com” reported on Thursday evening, a move for the 36-year-old defensive warrior to AS Roma failed. It is said that the previously promising negotiations between the parties have been broken off.

Bonucci was therefore unable to agree on the financial details of his contract with those responsible at the Romans.

Coach José Mourinho is also said to have ultimately no longer been convinced by the old master and is now looking for a different profile for his defensive department.

However, there had previously been fan protests against Bonucci. The Roman supporters take offense at his past with hated rivals Juventus Turin.

They expressed their displeasure on social networks with the hashtag #BonucciOut. According to reports from Italy, this is said to have already sown doubts about the personnel among the Roma bosses.

It still seems unlikely that the broken negotiations with the club from the Eternal City mean that Bonucci will stay at Union Berlin beyond January.

Among other things, “Bild” recently reported on thoughts of emigration from the 2021 European champions. From the new year onwards, he definitely wants to play for a team where he gets regular playing time, also with a view to the European Championship finals next summer in Germany.

“Misunderstanding” between Union Berlin and Leonardo Bonucci

Union secured Bonucci’s services for a free transfer last September. He had previously been rejected by Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri. His contract in Berlin runs until the end of the season.

However, Bonucci’s performance at Köpenicker was manageable. Most recently, the star even lost his regular place under new head coach Nenad Bjelica.

“I think it was a misunderstanding. Leonardo Bonucci, as European champion, is coming to Union Berlin – if they parted ways in the winter, it would be best for both sides,” said “Sky” expert Lothar Matthäus.
