A year ago still a reservist
You can see what a difference twelve months can make in football by looking at Sheraldo Becker (27) – the most prolific player in the Bundesliga was a reservist a year ago and was threatening to leave Union Berlin. “A player with my qualities has to play in my eyes,” said the attacker after the 7th matchday of the pre-season “Kicker”. At that time he was only on the pitch for 28 minutes and had a market value of 3 million euros.
Becker followed his words with deeds, came on as a substitute against VfL Wolfsburg on Matchday 8, scored and from then on was one of the permanent staff under coach Urs Fischer. 18 other goal participations and a contract extension until 2025 later he was able to increase his market value to 15 million euros.

“It is important that I can play from the start. The early days at Union were tough because I didn’t play regularly. In the meantime, everyone has given me their trust, ”said Becker in the “kicker”. “That’s also one of the reasons why I extended my contract. However, I still have more potential and I want to show everyone that.”

The Suriname international said about his relationship with the coach: “It’s always been good, we talk a lot and sometimes have discussions. But I think that’s normal. He helped me a lot. And not only on, but also off the pitch. I’m here in Berlin because I can play soccer. But that’s not all. I have to work hard, take care of my body. He helped me to internalize that and to get a little bit better every day. Another reason why I extended my contract.”
Fischer told Transfermarkt: “We know Sheraldo’s qualities. He has to look for one-on-one situations and use his speed, be braver and, like Jordan, attack the first post more often.” Becker is one of the fastest players in the Bundesliga – but he hasn’t really trained this strength: “No, I was born with it. You can train to get a little bit faster. But that’s about it. Players in the NFL are born with it too. And it’s the same in other sports. If it were possible to train that, I would of course do it.”
Becker moved from ADO Den Haag to Union Berlin on a free transfer in 2019 and finally made his breakthrough this season after the €20.5 million transfer from striker Taiwo Awoniyi (25) to Nottingham Forest. Alongside newcomer Jordan (26), the native of Amsterdam made sure that Union is not only number one in Berlin after seven match days. “I knew at all times that I was on the right path. But you also need a little patience to fully acclimatize,” says Becker.
