Every spring Unico van Gelder comes with its market stall with strawberry print and bins fresh summer fruit to Zoetermeer. Many regular customers in Buytenwegh and Oosterheem are eagerly looking forward to the juicy strawberries and crispy berries. “I used to be in the music, but nowadays I am in both Zoetermeer and along the A4 with my stall.”

You can find the summer fruit stalls of the Fruit fanatic throughout the country. From April to mid -September, Unico and his stall will be on Monday and Thursday on the Kentgensplein in the Buytenwegh shopping center. His colleague Mitchel is on Wednesday and Friday on Oosterheemplein.
Dutch and local
Behind his stall, Unico sings with the song loudly Sweet Caroline from Neil Diamond. With visible pleasure, he waits for new customers who release him from the sweet fruit. But also from the Limburg asparagus, pink raspberries, dark purple blackberries and fruit and vegetable shots. “All products come from local farmers,” says Unico proudly. “The biological strawberries are still coming from the greenhouse, but in the summer months we have summer doners from outside.”

Tasting not necessary
“Hey, I recognize you,” says a man who stands for strawberries at the stall. He recognizes Unico and his fruit stall from his location along the A4. “Many motorists know that I am standing there in the summer months,” says Unico. In recent years he has also built up a regular clientele in Buytenwegh. “If I offer people to taste the fruit, then that is often not necessary because they know the taste. They often let residents know through the BuurtApp that I am there again.”

Unico is a striking appearance with its first name, tail, singing and red strawberry stall. “My parents wanted to call me Nico at birth. But because my uncle was already called that, they came up with something else. It became Unico, unique in its kind!”
