Earlier it became clear that the Ministry of Water Management is preferable to renovate and stabilize the highest and oldest cast -iron lighthouse in Europe. In this way demolition should be prevented. Years ago it was feared that the lighthouse would fall over are due to overdue maintenance. Due to large cracks in the floors of the lighthouse, use and entering the national monument is life -threatening, Rijkswaterstaat warned.
Pearl of the North
CDA MP Harmen Krul is the waiting now and wants to quickly clarity from Minister Barry Madlener of Waterstaat. Krul has therefore entered a motion: “The pearl of the north has been rotting away for years due to poor maintenance. Residents of Den Helder have been waiting for the renovation of their icon for four years.” Before July 1, Krul wants to know from the minister what the feasibility is of maintaining the lighthouse.
According to Madlener, that clarity cannot yet be given, because investigations into the state of the lighthouse are still ongoing. Last week, part of the lighthouse was still being tackled. When a small part of the outer wall, a nut broke off spontaneously. This indicates that the lighthouse may be in a poorer condition than expected.
