UN Security Council emergency meeting on Ukraine

The United Nations Security Council will meet in an emergency session on Wednesday night to discuss the situation in Ukraine. Diplomats report to foreign news agencies that the meeting will probably start at 3.30 am (Dutch time). It is the second time in three days that the UN Security Council has been convened in an emergency session.

Ukraine called for the emergency meeting on Wednesday after the renegade regions in the east of the country asked for military aid from Russia to “fight against the Ukrainian government army”. The Ukrainian foreign minister called this “a further escalation of the situation”.

The situation in eastern Ukraine, where civil war has been going on since 2014, escalated further early this week after Russia recognized the renegade regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent. That statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin was reason for the UN Security Council to meet in the night from Monday to Tuesday.
