UN Security Council ‘deeply shocked’ by Israeli police action at Al Jazeera journalist’s funeral | Abroad

The United Nations Security Council has “firmly condemned” the murder of a journalist for the Arab broadcaster Al Jazeera in the West Bank in a resolution passed unanimously yesterday. That’s what diplomats say. Secretary General Antonio Guterres also said he was “deeply shocked” by the behavior of some Israeli police officers in East Jerusalem at the funeral of Shireen Abu Akleh.

Shireen Abu Akleh was shot in the head Wednesday morning while reporting clashes in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The 51-year-old American-Palestinian woman had a lot of experience with conflict reporting and was clearly recognizable as a journalist. She had worked as a Middle East reporter for Al Jazeera for 25 years.

The resolution in the UN Security Council came yesterday at the suggestion of the United States. It is exceptional that a position on an Israeli subject is unanimously adopted in the body consisting of fifteen countries.

The text also calls for “an immediate, thorough, transparent and impartial investigation” into the murder. It is also emphasized that it is important that the perpetrators are held accountable.

Secretary General Antonio Guterres also calls for respect for fundamental human rights, including freedom of opinion and expression and peaceful assembly. That said spokesman Farhan Haq after clashes broke out during the funeral of Shireen Abu Akleh.

As the coffin was carried yesterday from Saint Joseph’s Hospital in East Jerusalem, a Palestinian part of the city occupied and annexed by the Jewish state, Israeli police stormed into the buildings and tried to attack a crowd waving Palestinian flags, to drift apart.

The coffin nearly fell from the hands of the corpse bearers. Footage from local television also shows police using batons.
