Hoeneß explains ulterior motives for the Kompany extension

In October, FC Bayern extended their contract with coach Vincent Kompany – not without looking at the competition, as Uli Hoeneß has now revealed.
Uli Hoeneß has explained the special reasons for Bayern coach Vincent Kompany’s contract extension in October. In an interview with “Kicker”, the honorary president of the German record champions said that it was an “incredible leap of faith”.
“We wanted to express that we are completely convinced of his work and that he is a trainer who can inspire people here for a long time,” added the 74-year-old. However, there was also another motivation: a possible interest from Manchester City in Vincent Kompany.
Rumors continue at the top English club that Pep Guardiola could announce his early departure in the summer despite a contract that runs until 2027. Kompany was long considered a possible successor, as he played eleven years at City, three of them under Guardiola.
In addition to the ulterior motives behind the Kompany extension, Hoeneß also spoke about the Belgian’s commitment: “We were skeptical at first, he was number four or five we spoke to.” Rather, the people of Munich had already agreed with another candidate: Oliver Glasner.
The Austrian would also have come “if Crystal Palace had released him”. However, that didn’t happen, which is why Bayern relied on Kompany. At the beginning the decision was interpreted as brave, as the 39-year-old had previously only coached Anderlecht and Burnley.
