Ukrainian drone attack on Russian Sochi airport

KIEV (dpa-AFX) – According to unofficial information, Ukraine attacked the important Russian airport Sochi on the Black Sea with combat drones. The target was a parking area for helicopters, Ukrainian media reported on Sunday, citing intelligence sources. The attack was an action by military intelligence.

Russia’s main seaside resort of Sochi, from which President Vladimir Putin often conducts his official business, is about 800 kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled territory. The Russian Defense Ministry in Moscow said an enemy drone had been shot down over the Krasnodar region. Sochi is part of this administrative region.

The Sochi airport in the city of Adler was temporarily closed in the morning, according to Mayor Alexei Kopajgorodski. Incoming aircraft were diverted.

Ukrainian drone attacks were also reported in the Russian regions of Smolensk and Belgorod on Sunday. According to Moscow military reports, two Ukrainian missiles were intercepted over the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed by Russia. However, this could not be independently verified. Heavy explosions were recorded near the town of Dzhankoi in the north of Crimea./fko/DP/men
