KIEV (dpa-AFX) – The Ukrainian army says it has evacuated a village near the border in the Sumy region under pressure from Russian attacks. The 14th Army Corps announced on Facebook that this was the hamlet of Myropilske. In order to avoid their own losses, the defenders retreated to prepared positions.
The Russian army has crossed the border into the northern Ukrainian region of Sumy in several places. The Russians occupy the largest strip near Junakivka, from where Ukrainian troops advanced into the Kursk region of western Russia in 2024. The fighting for Myropilske represents another Russian invasion, even if the area conquered is small so far.
Russia has been waging a large-scale war of aggression against neighboring Ukraine for more than four years. On the ground, Russian troops have advanced continuously since autumn 2023, even if the gains in terrain remained small and came at the cost of high losses. Ukraine is defending itself primarily with the increasingly intensive use of small battlefield drones./fko/DP/he
