KIEV (dpa-AFX) – According to Ukrainian information, Russia attacked Kiev again with drones on Saturday night. Five people were injured, including an eleven-year-old child, wrote Mayor Vitali Klitschko on Telegram. With regard to the air alarm, which lasted for a total of six hours, he spoke of the “heaviest drone attack” on the Ukrainian capital since the beginning of the war.
Klitschko also reported debris from drones that had crashed. As a result, fires broke out in several places, including in a residential building and a kindergarten. According to the military administration in Kiev, a fire broke out in an area of 100 square meters as a result of falling debris in an uninhabited area. In addition, a high-rise building on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River caught fire due to falling debris. A dpa reporter reported heavy, long-lasting anti-aircraft fire that night.
The Russians attacked across the country with a total of 75 combat drones, as the Ukrainian Air Force announced this morning. They managed to shoot down 74 of them. In addition to Kiev, air alarms sounded in the areas of Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk and Mykolaiv, among others.
Russia has repeatedly hit Ukraine with air strikes since its war of aggression began on February 24, 2022. After the deliveries of Western air defense systems, the Ukrainian air defense system is able to shoot down the majority of drones and missiles. The country has called on the West to supply even more anti-aircraft systems in order to better protect its cities and regions.
Since last fall, Russia has repeatedly and systematically attacked energy supply facilities in its neighboring country. Kiev is also expecting targeted attacks from Moscow against Ukraine’s electricity, heat and water supplies this winter.
