UEFA Youth League: BVB and SGE continue, trio out for FC Bayern

Group stage ended

The youth teams from Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund spend the winter in the UEFA Youth League. While the Hessians were already certain before the final day of the game that the knockout round would continue, BVB moved up to second place in Group G late in the decisive game on Wednesday against direct competitor FC Copenhagen. DFB junior Paris Brunner scored the only goal of the game in the 87th minute. If the SBU and BVB have secured progress, the trio FC Bayern, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen is already over in the group phase. For all three teams, the end was already clear before the final day of the game.

After six defeats, Leverkusen was the only participant to end the tournament with zero points. Against Atlético Madrid, FC Porto and FC Brugge in Group B, the final record showed a goal difference of -15. After the 1-0 defeat against Brugge on Wednesday, coach Sven cticer said that he “can’t blame his team today”. His players had “implemented his instructions well”, which is why the result was “all the more annoying”. FC Bayern got at least six points, while Leipzig had five points. For both teams it was not enough for more than third place in the respective groups.

Bayern’s professional coach Julian Nagelsmann was upset about the early end of the juniors. As a young player you have to develop a certain winning gene, he emphasized at the press conference before the duel with Inter (2-0). “I know that they are doing well at youth level and that they have tried everything to win more games in the Youth League. I think it’s good for us in the future to continue to put everything into it, that we’ll play a better role compared to Europe,” said the 35-year-old. For Munich it was the second end in a row in the group phase.

At RB Leipzig, coach Daniel Meyer highlighted the development of his team during the group stage. “In the six Youth League games we showed a development and proved that we can keep up at the high level. At the beginning we still had a few adjustment problems, but in the last few games we always had the opportunity to score – that’s worth a lot,” said the 43-year-old after the 0-0 draw against Shakthar Donzek on Wednesday. Group opponents Real Madrid have the best result of all participants after beating Celtic Glasgow 4-1 with 16 points and a goal difference of 23:5.
