For the first time in nine years, Mainz 05 has the chance to play in a European competition. For this, Mainz has to win the playoff games against Rosenborg or Hammarby.
Does Mainz 05 have to book the first European Cup trip to Norway or Sweden in nine years? That is the question. Because the winner from the games between Rosenborg BK from Trondheim and Hammarby IF from Stockholm becomes the opponent of Mainz 05 in the playoffs for the European Conference League.
Mainz 05 begins away
Mainz 05 has qualified for the playoffs for the Conference League as the sixth in the table of the past Bundesliga season. The first leg against Rodenborg/Hammarby takes place on August 21, the second leg in Mainz a week later on August 28th.
If Mainz 05 prevails in the two playoff games, the Bundesliga club would be qualified for the league phase of the Conference League. Mainz would then have six games in the Conference League between October 2 and December 18. Even before the draw, in which sports director Christian Heidel and managing director Michael Kammerer took part in Nyon, the club had prepared for the possible opponents.
These are the possible opponents of Mainz
Rosenborg BK (Norway, airline 1,497 kilometers): The Norwegians play their home games in the “Lerkendal Stadium”, which takes around 21,400 spectators. Rosenborg is currently fifth in the elite series. In the second round of the Conference League qualification, they won the FK Banga from Lithuania.
Hammarby IF (Sweden, airline 1,209 kilometers): Hammarby is located in the Swedish capital Stockholm and plays out his home games in the “3arena”, which has around 30,000 places. The team is currently in the 2nd place in the Allsvenskan, and in the second qualifying round they won against the Belgian club Royal Charleroi.
