All good things come in fours: Uefa is discussing a preparatory tournament that will consist of a few teams and should take place at the beginning of the season. At least that’s what the AP news agency reports. Participants are four teams, which should be selected according to the club coefficient. Including the Champions League winner.
A third European competition, the Conference League, was only introduced last season alongside the Champions League and Europa League.
Final Four tournament in the premier class
However, the winner of the Champions League would no longer play against the winner of the Europa League in the Uefa Supercup as before. Instead, the winner of the Conference League could move up and play the game.
The preparatory tournament could become a test phase of the Final Four scenario, which can also be considered for the premier class in the future. The British daily newspaper “The Times” recently reported that Uefa is considering this mode from the semi-finals onwards.
During the corona pandemic, the scenario had already been implemented in Lisbon in 2020. The semi-finals were played in a knockout instead of a two-legged match.
