After the controversial penalty decision in injury time of the Champions League game between Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United (1-1), the responsible video assistant Tomasz Kwiatkowski was suspended for one game by UEFA.
The Pole was also supposed to assist in the Group D game between Real Sociedad and RB Salzburg on Wednesday, but will not be used there.
In the game in Paris, referee Szymon Marciniak initially did not give a penalty after an alleged handball by Newcastle’s Valentino Livramento, but was then asked by Kwiatkowski to go to the sidelines to look at the pictures.
The referee then changed his mind and superstar Kylian Mbappé (90+8) converted the following penalty to make the final score 1-1.
The VAR had switched on, although Livramento had received a cross from ex-Dortmunder Ousmane Dembélé from close range, first hitting his upper body and then bouncing off his arm.
After the game, Newcastle coach Eddie Howe described the whistle, which probably cost group rivals Borussia Dortmund their early group victory, as a “bad decision”.
