Defending champion Germany reached the knockout rounds as group winners at the U17 World Cup in Qatar. The youth selection of the German Football Association (DFB) achieved its first victory in the third and final game of Group G in Doha. Coach Marc-Patrick Meister’s team won against El Salvador 7-0 (3-0).

Leverkusen’s Jeremiah Mensah with a brace (32nd/57th minute), Frankfurt’s Alexander Staff (41st), Munich’s Wisdom Mike (45th), Paderborn’s Lasse Eickel (60th) and Frankfurt’s Christian Prenaj (84th) scored the goals at the Schützenfest. In addition, Andrew Reyes (52nd) scored an own goal.

The DFB team couldn’t get more than a 1-1 draw against North Korea and Colombia. The opponent in the round of 16 of the World Cup, in which 48 teams are taking part for the first time, has not yet been determined. The final will take place on November 27th. Two years ago, the then U17 team won the World Cup title in Indonesia under current women’s national coach Christian Wück.
