Two thirds of all DJs don’t play the music they listen to privately at gigs

Well, that only sounds surprising to a certain extent: A study has shown that 65 percent of DJs don’t play the music at performances that they also listen to privately. The page “pirate.com” surveyed 260 DJs in the UK and released the results on Tuesday (December 13). Spotify’s annual review “Wrapped” was used to arrive at the results.

“Wrapped” created an overview of the listening behavior and in addition, the corresponding DJs were asked a few questions, including what music they play at their gigs. The result was that 65 percent of those questioned play different music than they hear in everyday life. In addition, 63 percent stated that their listening behavior adapts to their environment. “I wake up to shoegaze/dream pop every morning. During the day I listen to soft acoustic or jazz records and tune in to my local radio station. At night I listen to lyrically strong or very emotional music. In the clubs, it’s mainly UK garage and bassline stuff with one or two hyperpop bangers,” says a DJ who primarily plays bass-heavy songs.

When asked how they discover new music, 60 percent found new songs through suggestions from their friends and 75 percent through SoundCloud. One respondent says: “I mainly use SoundCloud to find new music, [denn] the related titles section is great. There’s also a Stations section that creates a list of tracks based on what you’ve been listening to.”
