The ships ‘Friendship’ and ‘Tiger Moth’, which are part of the fleet of the activist collective Nuestra América (Our America), have been found again. The sailboats, which sail from Mexico to Cuba, were temporarily missing.
The ships were found by the Mexican navy and the nine crew members were unharmed, according to Reuters. They continue their journey to Havana. It is unclear how the boats were temporarily missing. The two ships should have arrived in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday. When that didn’t happen, the Mexican navy began a search on Friday.
The sailboats are part of a humanitarian fleet. With the trip, activists want to break the American blockade of Cuba. Hundreds of people from dozens of countries participate in the tour. As far as we know, there are no Dutch participants. The ships carry food, medicine and solar panels, among other things, a total of about twenty tons of humanitarian aid for Cuba.
Cuba is in a dire situation. The country was dependent on Venezuela for oil supplies. Since the United States kidnapped the president of that country in early January, Cuba has been struggling with major fuel shortages. US President Donald Trump imposed an oil embargo on the country. He sees the communist Cuban regime as a threat to American security. The oil embargo currently limits daily life in Cuba: power cuts regularly and food and transport prices are rising sharply.
