Two houses uninhabitable after car fire in Assen: ‘This is extremely dangerous, they are simply assassination attempts’

This morning’s car fire at Doevenkamp in Assen has resulted in two apartments being declared uninhabitable. This was reported by a spokesperson for the Drenthe Safety Region.

A total of 16 apartments were evacuated. The residents of 14 homes are expected to be able to return home today. A different solution is being sought for the residents of the two other apartments.

This morning, residents of Doevenkamp were startled by a car fire just after six. It raged in a parking lot beneath an apartment complex. At least two cars went up in flames. The fire then spread to the insulation material of the houses above.

Local residents were evacuated and were sheltered in the town hall. One of them is Henk Santing: “I woke up this morning to people screaming. Then there was a bang, so I wondered if it was a gun shot or something else. Then I looked at my phone and it was 6.15, I I still heard people screaming. Then I got out of bed.”

Santing saw many people on the street. And he also agreed: “I saw that there was a fire and not just a small one. The flames were completely out. Exactly what you are afraid of, in the parking lot under the flats. That is quite intense, you I’ll just live above it.” According to the Doevenkamp resident and leader of city party P, people are reacting shocked. He heard that people couldn’t even see where they were in their homes because of the smoke.

Henk Santing was sheltered in the town hall together with other residents, but he was allowed to return to his home fairly quickly. “I was shocked by it, but at the same time, things happen here often. A week ago there was also a car fire, not as intense as this one. But let’s hope that nothing much happens again. This is life-threatening, these are simply assassination attempts.” , said Santing.
