Two Door Cinema Club: “Keep On Smiling” (Review & Stream)

The Northern Irish around singer Alex Trimble have given us some of the best electropop moments of the last thirteen years; just think of “Sun”, “What You Know” and “Next Year”. But now that many new bands are invoking the indie trio’s signature sound, something terrible has happened: Two Door Cinema Club doesn’t sound like themselves at all anymore.

After all, the attempt is made to develop further with nu-disco and electro-funk tendencies. But that sucks: The keyboard carpets stick everything together, the previously irresistible melodies can’t be surpassed in terms of interchangeability, and there’s not much that distinguishes our friends from teenage darlings like the Jonas Brothers. And, ouch – Auto-Tune.
